Art in the Afternoon @ Tauranga Art Gallery

Friends of the Tauranga Art Gallery co-ordinate a monthly series of talks:  Art in the Afternoon.  Stitch creative and long-time supporter of the Gallery and Friends of the Gallery, Linda Inglis, reports on the October 2015 talk by Nicol Sanders-O’Shea

Nicol, an award-winning local artist who is invited to exhibit nationally, was recently exhibiting alongside over 20 artists in the gallery’s exhibition ‘Printmaking Beyond the Frame’. Nicol’s work ‘Home Cloud’ is a group of 30 pieces presented in a cloud formation with part of the work printed onto the gallery wall.

Nicol gave us an enlightened talk about her arts practice involving her love of printmaking, especially screen printing, which she can do on most surfaces. She loves how this medium gives instant results. Often her work evolves during the process. Initially Nicol may plan a work of 10 pieces that finalises with up to 100 pieces.

Having a family in 2008 has inspired her work, as well as an interest in storytelling and ideas from childhood and adulthood. Nicol, who is heavily involved in the Tauranga Arts community, believes being part of a variety of arts projects keeps an artist stimulated and motivated. She also works full-time as a tutor and programme co-ordinator for the Bachelor of Creative Industries at the BOP Polytechnic.

Nicol finished her presentation with an insight into why she is an artist. She believes owning her work gives it validity, it keeps her current, connects her arts practice to her teaching, connects her with other artists, moves her career forward, it builds trust and is hugely rewarding.

Everyone is welcome to attend these monthly presentations, coordinated by the Friends of the Gallery, on the first Wednesday of the month at the gallery at 2.45pm. Gold coin entry fee for Friends, $5 for public with a cuppa included.    The next Art in the Afternoon will be on Wednesday 4th November at 2.45pm where Artist Craig McClure will talk about his comic book inspired works.
