GREERTON VILLAGE
“CRAZY SEXY KNITTERS” PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION
Until the end of July 2014
From Victoria Thomas, Greerton Mainstreet Manager: The idea seemed crazy at first than 30 knitters hunkered down in lounges, at cafes and learning institutions (and in some case from as far away as England!) turning kilometres of scrap yarn into brightly coloured tree socks! way as England!), turning kilometres of brightly coloured yarn into tree socks. Then as the sunny days turned into winter, these zany yarn artists fixed their sights on the naked cherry blossom trees of Greerton Village.

The 2014 yarn bomb project is themed around fairy tales and nursery rhymes. A public art installation, it brings together people of all ages and abilities to unleash their creative talents to brighten up our community in an otherwise dull season.

Greerton Mainstreet is a driving force behind the project and manager Victoria Thomas has been delighted to see the group grow. This year it includes the teachers, children, parents and grandparents of the local kindy in the project, who have created their very own tree inspired by the children’s favourite story Rapunzel. Other creations this year include a tree inspired by the popular Disney story Frozen and last year’s popular breast cancer survivor has grown to include characters from Snow White and a few references to the nursery rhymes Hickory Dickory Dock and little Miss Muffet.

The effort that all the artists have gone to this year is incredible, says Victoria. Visitors to Greerton will enjoy seeing the installations and the amazing creativity behind them.

The art pieces will be on display until around the end of July when they will be stored and restored in time for next year’s yarn bombing exhibitions, along with new creations.

BAY OF PLENTY SYMPHONIA LEGACY TRUST ‘MAJOR KEYS’
Bay of Plenty Symphonia returns to a classical theme for its next orchestral concerts. The title is ‘Major Keys’ because all three items on the programme are in sunny major keys – and because the solo instrument in Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s lively Concerto in D major has lots of keys! It’s the marimba (not to be confused with the xylophone!) – a percussion instrument with a mellow and deep sound producing a very rich repertoire of colours. Originally this Spanish-influenced concerto was written for guitar, but it is particularly suitable for the marimba, as both instruments cover a similar pitch range; textures such as strumming also work well on the marimba.
The Symphonia’s soloist in this tuneful 20th Century concerto is Yoshiko Tsuruta, the only dedicated marimbist in New Zealand. She won the prestigious New Zealand School of Music concerto Competition and the National Concerto Competition, before furthering her marimba studies in Europe. Because of the instrument’s large size, Yoshiko’s concert performance is not only wonderful to hear, but also very visual, as she almost seems to dance around her marimba. This will be a real ‘audience experience’ and a great way of introducing the next generation to classical music.
The concert programme will open with Wagner’s ‘Siegfried Idyll’, a beautiful lullaby written after the birth of his son Siegfried in 1870. Finally, the orchestra will play one of Beethoven’s most popular symphonies, the rhythmic and optimistic 7th in A major.
