May is the month we acknowledge the music of Aotearoa New Zealand. A month started when local music was not as accepted as a sound from somewhere over there. Do we still need a NZ Music Month? Yes. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the ethnic, cultural and creatively diverse musical threads of our community. From our National Anthem to Tryptofunk – this is New Zealand music.
We could go on forever with the list of words, voices, compositions…this is a mere fragment of the talent we have here.
Maybe not “New Zealand music” but these two epitomise New Zealand musicality and it’s Dames Malvina Major and Kiri Te Kanawa.
