RISING STARS COMPETITION 2015 – APPLICATIONS OPEN!

Bay of Plenty Symphonia

One of Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s objectives is to encourage young musicians – both in playing instruments and appreciating orchestral music. They do this by dedicating one of their concerts each year to ‘youth music’. In alternate years the Symphonia either performs a concert for Year 5-8 school children or runs a competition for secondary school students.

Recently many of the younger children came along to Bethlehem College and enjoyed listening to the orchestra playing some favourite pieces. Several volunteers got to come up on stage and sit amongst the players, and some were even able to conduct the orchestra! As one happy young person said: ‘I thought that the show was amazing and very busy, so there was always a different instrument to look at.’

Next year it will be the turn of the older students, and applications are now open for the Symphonia’s fourth Rising Stars Competition. The competition is designed to give young musicians from the Bay of Plenty a platform to exhibit their talent, and to introduce them to the New Zealand public.

This year there will be two classes: the usual concerto competition for instrumentalists and, for the first time, a class for young composers. Concerto finalists will perform with the orchestra at a concert in September 2015 and the winner will be selected by a panel of nationally recognised judges. The winning composition will also be performed by Bay of Plenty Symphonia. Winners of both competitions and all concerto finalists will receive a cash prize.

Further details and entry forms are available from bopssecretary@gmail.com. Entries (expressions of interest) close on 20th February 2015 www.bopsymphonia.org.nz

BAY OF PLENTY SYMPHONIA The Bay of Plenty’s Community Orchestra

Bay of Plenty Symphonia is a local community orchestra based in Tauranga but also with members from the wider Bay of Plenty including Katikati, Rotorua and Te Puke. The players are enthusiastic amateur musicians of all ages who come together for weekly rehearsals and generally perform four concert programmes each year. Usually two of these concerts comprise relatively serious classical music, and one has a lighter programme with wider audience appeal. The remaining performance is dedicated to encouraging young people to enjoy and participate in orchestral music. On alternate years we present either a Kids’ Concert for years 5-8 school students, with plenty of fun and audience participation, or a Rising Stars competition for aspiring young soloists and composers.

Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s Music Director is Justus Rozemond, who is also principal conductor. Under his direction the orchestra has a policy of inviting top soloists to perform with the orchestra.
