BAY OF PLENTY SYMPHONIA
LEGACY TRUST ‘MAJOR KEYS’ CONCERTS

GRAHAM YOUNG THEATRE, TAURANGA BOYS COLLEGE
Saturday 9th August, 7.30 pm

WAIHI BEACH COMMUNITY CENTRE
Sunday 10th August, 2 pm

Bay of Plenty Symphonia returns to a classical theme for its next orchestral concerts. The title is ‘Major Keys’ because all three items on the programme are in sunny major keys – and because the solo instrument in Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s lively Concerto in D major has lots of keys! It’s the marimba (not to be confused with the xylophone!) – a percussion instrument with a mellow and deep sound producing a very rich repertoire of colours. Originally this Spanish-influenced concerto was written for guitar, but it is particularly suitable for the marimba, as both instruments cover a similar pitch range; textures such as strumming also work well on the marimba.
The Symphonia’s soloist in this tuneful 20th Century concerto is Yoshiko Tsuruta, the only dedicated marimbist in New Zealand. She won the prestigious New Zealand School of Music concerto Competition and the National Concerto Competition, before furthering her marimba studies in Europe. Because of the instrument’s large size, Yoshiko’s concert performance is not only wonderful to hear, but also very visual, as she almost seems to dance around her marimba. This will be a real ‘audience experience’ and a great way of introducing the next generation to classical music.
The concert programme will open with Wagner’s ‘Siegfried Idyll’, a beautiful lullaby written after the birth of his son Siegfried in 1870. Finally, the orchestra will play one of Beethoven’s most popular symphonies, the rhythmic and optimistic 7th in A major.
