I found this new Gallery by accident as I was walking back to my car. The Gallery is an addition to the existing cafe and salon. It’s a gallery created between the two existing activities. Loyal’s Julie Paama-Pengelly Retrospective 2002-2012 “Considering the disjuncture between ideologies of Citzenship and shifting Maori identity” The best way to describe the work is contemporary New Zealand art which references the background of the artist which is Maori.
Loyal’s includes painting, enamel and metal jewellery, printmaking and an amazing series of hei tiki moko created with the rearranged sole of a tiny Nike. There is an excellent A4 size artists statement accompanying this exhibition. I’m not sure how long it is to continue but if you have the opportunity – go and look at the Paama-Pengelly works and the accompaning architectural pottery and carved pieces do so.
Keep an eye on ARTbop to see what other exhibitons may be held in the future at this Gallery.
