I take my visitor from Auckland over to Lightwave Gallery in Mount Maunganui for the opening of the exhibition of Kaitaia Artist Colleen Waite – A World of Diversity. My friend immediately exclaims that walking into Lightwave Gallery is like walking into an explosion of content and colour – and that’s before we’ve been in any of the small specialist exhibition side galleries. She loves the impressive display of so much and so much differently styled work; laughs and appreciates the RayGunRex gallery. Once in the gallery showing the Colleen Waite works she’s gone. It’s clear she would love to own one of these outstandingly coloured, multilayered and textured works. I discretely leave to talk with Director Karen Wright while my friend decides which work she wants in her home.
The Bay of Plenty Times, Vibe of Thursday 17 April 2014, Page 5 has an article and image of Colleen and there is also information on the Lightwave Gallery website www.lightwavegallery.co.nz Interestingly Colleen is described in the Bay of Plenty Times article as “The almost-pensioner…the 65 year old from Kaitaia…”. Colleen is another example of the Rolling Stones. Elton John, Pablo Picasso factor – age is irrelevant to talent!
You can visit the Lightwave Gallery at 31 Totara Street, Mount Maunganui.
